The cottages are part of our 5 acre organic permaculture property, a mix of fruit trees, vineyard, gardens, and regenerating native New Zealand bush which stretches around the estuary shore. Nelson’s Waimea Inlet is famous for its wading and migratory birds: pied stilts, oyster-catchers, bar tailed godwits, herons, royal spoonbills and more can be seen from the decks and gardens of both cottages.

Explore Abel Tasman, Kahurangi
and Nelson Lakes National Parks

The Nelson /Tasman region is well known for having an excellent a range of outdoor pursuits, including river and beach swimming, hiking, kayaking and fishing (river and sea) all close by. Matahua Cottages are perfectly positioned for day trips to the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks.

Should you prefer to stay in and relax, the private and tranquil cottages are perfectly equipped for the simple pleasures of a real kiwi bach holiday with hammocks, good books, board games, barbecues, braziers and endless views to gaze at. On a full tide you can explore the quiet estuary by kayak. The cottages both have woodburners, keeping them cosy in winter, and both have good cellphone coverage and wifi for those who want to stay in touch with the outside world.

Whilst secluded and private, the cottage accommodation is also extremely accessible to Nelson; just 20 minutes (24km) from Nelson airport and less than 5 minutes to the coastal village of Mapua. Mapua’s thriving wharf area has cafés and restaurants as well as galleries representing local artists.
