Matahua Cottages
Miro & Karaka

Mata (noun) headland + hua (verb) to bear fruit / be abundant Matahua means peninsula of abundance / the peninsula which bears fruit.

Awarded "best holiday cottages in New Zealand 2007, 2008 and 2009" by The Sunday Star Times Magazine, Matahua Cottages (Miro & Karaka) offer a tranquil retreat on the shores of the Waimea Estuary and a base from which to explore the Nelson region.

Whether you are searching for the perfect location for a romantic get-away, the base for family expeditions, a peaceful and inspiring place to escape the rat race, or a destination for birdwatching, these cottages are perfect.

Miro (1 bedroom) & Karaka (2-3 bedrooms) are two self-contained renovated 1950s apple picker's cottages. Set in 5 acres of organic orchard, vineyard and regenerating bush, each cottage has absolute privacy (30 metres and a lot of trees between the two) and its own garden leading to the foreshore where you can relax in a hammock and watch wading birds paddle by.

Whilst secluded and private the cottages are also extremely accessible ... the bustling coastal village of Mapua is only a short drive away (4 km). Mapua offers enticing cafés and restaurants at its busy wharf and galleries representing local artists. Just 20 minutes (24 km) from Nelson airport and located in the heart of the Nelson wine region, the cottages are ideally situated for sampling the cellar door delights of the outstanding local vineyards, swimming on the long white sandy beach of Rabbit Island just 10 minutes away, or in the beautiful deep swimming holes of Wairoa Gorge and Aniseed Valley. The spectacular Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks are only 40 minutes away, as is Kaiterteri beach with its famous golden sand.

Both cottages have wireless broadband connections, so if you need to plug into the outside world you can do so without leaving the deck.
